This is my go-to smoothie in the summer when I have an abundance of fresh basil in the garden. The basil tastes so fresh and it has just the right amount of sweetness to balance the tartness of the blueberries and lemon. Not only is it super healthy, it is also super easy to make. All you need to do is add all the ingredients into a blender and your smoothie is ready in minutes.
Ingredients
- Coconut milk is a healthy fat that will help you stay full for longer
- Frozen blueberries are full of antioxidants, which help to fight aging and combat disease
- Basil leaves aid in digestion and help to combat bloating
- Frozen mango is high in vitamin C, folate and are low in calories compared to bananas, which are commonly used in smoothies
- Lemon juice helps your body get rid of toxins and aids in digestion
- Honey is an antioxidant and also has antibacterial properties
Tools
- The tools for this recipe are super simple. All you need is a high speed blender
Tips
- I like to use full-fat organic canned coconut milk instead of light coconut milk. You can turn full-fat coconut milk into light coconut milk by adding equal parts water. I also prefer the canned coconut milk because it only has one ingredient, the only one it should have, coconut milk. The coconut milk that comes in the cartons often has some unnecessary ingredients added like sunflower oil and gums.
- Fresh basil will keep longer in your fridge if you wrap the stems with a damp paper towel
- To get a super smooth smoothie, buy a blender that has at least 1000 watts or more, anything lower will not be powerful enough to break up the chunks of frozen fruit
Healthy Additions
You could add any of the following to your smoothie to make it even healthier. Keep in mind that adding these things will change the amount of calories.
- Flax seeds have plenty of omega 3 fatty acids
- Chocolate or vanilla protein powder will help you stay full for longer
- Liquid or powder collagen will help your skin look healthy and firmer and helps your hair and nails grow long and strong
- Chia seeds for extra fiber
- Hemp hearts have plenty of fiber, magnesium, potassium and protein
